Board makes decisions on ballot bag issues

The King County Elections tabulation team's final numbers for the day show 23,463 ballots counted, which represents all ballots on hand ready to be tabulated.
Election results summary:
- 23,463 absentee ballots tabulated today
- 371,244 absentee ballots tabulated to date
- 179,565 poll ballots tabulated to date (does not include provisional ballots)

The Canvassing Board also met today to discuss standard ballot issues of voter intent. They also heard a report on absentee ballots turned in at the polls, which created problems for poll workers who were unable to properly secure them in bags designated for ballot transport due to the sheer volume of mail ballots returned to the polls. State law requires staff report these types of issues to the Canvassing Board for guidance and direction.
Staff have not opened all 118 bags containing mail ballots returned to King County Elections on the night of the election; however, information from the bag transmittal sheets indicate the initial absentee ballot count is approximately 13,415** absentee ballots. A full count will be available after the Canvassing Board makes a decision on additional bags.
The three Canvassing Board Members, County Councilmember Julia Patterson, Prosecuting Attorney's Office Chief of Staff .Dan Satterberg, and Interim Director of Records and Elections and Licensing Services Division Jim Buck, unanimously agreed and voted on several issues related to absentees returned without sufficient seals or paperwork.
1 – Confirmed the absentee ballots were in the custody of election workers on Election Day and that bags with missing seals or non-matching seal numbers signed by two poll workers move forward into the signature verification and tabulation process. Initial counts indicate this to be approximately 74 bags. **
2 - That all absentee ballots returned wrapped in plastic bags without an appropriate transmittal form or seal be presented individually to the Canvassing Board for a ruling or decision on validity. Initial counts indicate this to be approximately 9 bags. **
3 - That staff investigate whether they can obtain information from poll workers to corroborate information on approximately 34 bags, and verify the chain of custody of one absentee ballot bag returned by a poll worker on November 8, bringing the initial count in this category to approximately 35 bags. **
4 - That staff address poll closure procedures and training as well as the errors made by poll workers.
** Note : The number of bags and ballot count in question are unofficial and could change after Election staff re-examine the ballots and verify signatures.
