King County Elections finishes initial mailing of ballots

Today King County Elections finished the initial mailing of all 602,100 absentee ballots with a final batch of only 801 mailed this morning. Ballots were mailed out beginning on October 13 and today’s mailing concludes all absentee ballot requests received through Thursday, October 19, 2006.

Mail ballots have also been available in person since Wednesday, October 18 as required by law.

“We knew it would be a push to get all the ballots mailed due to the time lost to the manual recount in the Northeast Judicial District. Staff put in a tremendous effort this month working 15 hours a day and seven days a week to get the ballots mailed,” said Sherril Huff Menees, Assistant Director of Records, Elections and Licensing Services. “An August primary in 2007 will give us an additional time to do what we scramble to do in just three weeks now.”

According to RCW 29A.40.070 (4) elections must notify the media as well as any jurisdictions and candidates on the ballot day if the initial mailing of all requests for absentee ballots received through October 19, 2006 were not in the mail by October 20, 2006.
