Registration deadline Monday, Feb.27

Absentee voters in the Highline and Vashon Island school districts and the Vashon-Maury Parks and Recreation District will receive ballots in the mail this week for the upcoming March 14 special election.

Election officials predict a 35.8 percent turnout in the special election based on historical trends and estimate more than 80 percent of the total ballots cast will come through the mail.

For eligible citizens in the participating districts, King County Elections is extending its office hours to register voters.  The Elections' office in downtown Seattle office will be open Saturday, Feb.25 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Monday, Feb. 27 is the last day to register to vote in person.

In addition to the extended Saturday office hours, election officials will offer in-person registration this Saturday, Feb. 25 at Bellevue Square on the second floor between the Aveda and Johnston & Murphy stores from noon to 5 p.m. and again on Sunday, Feb. 26 at the Westfield Southcenter Mall between JC Penny and Fred Meyer Jewelers from noon to 5 p.m.

Dean Logan, director of the Records, Elections and Licensing Services Division, reminds voters to carefully follow instructions when completing their ballot.

  • Follow instructions. Use a dark pen to fill in the oval next to your choice. Fill in the oval completely. If you make an error in voting, draw an "X" through the error and fill in the correct oval. Stray marks on your ballot may require election workers to duplicate your ballot in order for your ballot to count.
  • Before sealing your ballot in the secrecy envelope, take a second look. Make sure you've followed directions and filled in the ovals completely. Take the extra effort to ensure your vote is counted.
  • Sign your return envelope. To ensure your absentee ballot is counted, be sure to sign the outer envelope before you return it. Do not sign or initial on the ballot itself.
  • Mail your ballot early. Absentee ballots must be postmarked on or before Election Day.
