King County certifies recount of Sheriff's race

Methodology: Ten precincts selected at random from each of King County's 17 legislative districts were recounted. Ultimately 160 precincts were counted since one legislative district had just two precincts and two of the randomly selected precincts had no registered voters.

The King County Canvassing Board today certified the mandatory recount of the King County Sheriff's race. Under a seldom used provision of the state's recount laws, the candidates for the second position on the ballot agreed to forgo the manual recount triggered by the small margin between them in favor of a machine recount of 10 randomly selected precincts in each of the 17 legislative districts within King County.

Certified results from the recount resulted in Greg Schmidt leading Jim Fuda with a difference of 62 votes. Schmidt will advance to the November 8 General Election along with Sue Rahr.

The sample of 18,761 ballots from 160 precincts were recounted and applied to the cumulative results from the original vote.
