Of the 329 county, city and local taxing district positions on the 2005 ballot, 508 candidates successfully filed for office last week. Though a near record number of candidates filed for office, many candidates will head directly to the General Election with no competition at all.

"The public deserves a vigorous political debate over issues that impact every aspect of their lives," said Dean Logan, director of the Records, Elections and Licensing Services Division. "From land-use decisions to tax issues, voters this fall will elect leaders who will shape the future of King County. These are the local government positions that make decisions closest to home."

Candidates who wish to file during the special, three day filing period must complete a declaration of candidacy and, if required, pay a filing fee or submit a filing fee petition in person by 4:30 p.m. Friday, August 5 at King County Elections located at 500 Fourth Avenue, Room 553.

"With 501 candidates competing in an odd-year election, it is clear to me that citizens in King County remain passionate about serving in local governments" said Logan.

(Note: As of Monday, seven candidates have withdrawn their filings.)

In the event no candidates file at the conclusion of the three day filing period, election officials will declare an election laps for those positions and the incumbent will remain in the position until the next odd-year election cycle. If the position is vacant, the jurisdiction may appoint someone to serve until the next election.

Candidates who filed for office last week have until the close of business Thursday, August 4 to withdraw their declarations of candidacy. All withdrawals must be made in writing and received by 4:30 p.m. Thursday, August 4. The filing fee is not refundable.
