Absentee ballots mailed for May Special Election

Nearly 23,000 absentee voters in Fire Protection Districts 41 and 44 and voters in the City of Covington will receive ballots this week for the upcoming May 17 Special Election. The three ballot measures affect about 40,000 residents in unincorporated areas of King County. Based on past voting trends in these areas, election officials estimate a 33.8 percent turnout.

Residents in Fire Protection District No. 41, which covers unincorporated areas south of Kenmore and Bothell and north of Kirkland, will vote on a levy to raise district property tax. Read the Fire Protection District No. 41 voters’ pamphlet at http://www.kingcounty.gov/elections .

Voters in Fire Protection District 44, which extends through parts of unincorporated south King County from Auburn to Black Diamond, will vote on a proposed levy to finance fire protection, prevention and emergency medical services.

Lastly, Referendum 1 will ask voters in the City of Covington to either approve or reject a tax on utility providers operating within the city limits. Read the City of Covington voters’ pamphlet at http://www.kingcounty.gov/elections .

A simple majority of more than 50 percent is required to pass both fire district levies and the Covington Referendum.

Residents in the City of Covington, and Fire Protection Districts 41 and 44, who are not registered to vote, have until Monday, May 2, 2005 to register in-person at the King County Elections Office located at 500 Fourth Avenue in the King County Administration Building.

All identified military, overseas and out-of-state voters were mailed absentee ballots last week by April 20. Absentee ballots must be postmarked by Election Day and received by May 27.
