King County ballot count update

King County Elections today counted 16,992 ballots, of which 12,317 were valid provisional ballots. This brings the total number of absentee ballots counted to 562,483. Election officials project an estimated 4,000 absentee and provisional ballots remain to be counted.

Today's count is higher than initially projected due to the record number of absentee ballots returned and the high validation rate of provisional ballots. Election estimate 83.7 percent of all provisional ballots have been verified compared to 78 percent in 2000.

Of the 646,537 absentee ballots issued, 566,291, or 87.59 percent, have been returned.

Ballots counted through today include those received through Nov. 13.

Voters who cast a provisional ballot may check the status of their ballot online and have until 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16 to provide additional information to make sure their ballots are counted.

A mandatory recount will be issued by the Secretary of State if the difference between two candidates is less than ½ of one percent and less than 2000 votes.

The next ballot count will be issued Tuesday, Nov.16 at 4 p.m. Visit your.kingcounty.gov/elections/2004nov/schedule.htm for King County Elections' updated report schedule.
