Timeline Between Recount and General Election
-
The timeline between the Primary and General Elections is very short in the state of Washington, an issue the state legislature has been encouraged to fix for more than two decades. In fact, with about five weeks between the Primary and General Elections, Washington has one of the latest primaries in the nation.
-
Affecting the tight timeline are the following circumstances:
-
The recount will have to be concurrent with preparation for the General Election. So whereas in the 2004 recounts all staff could be dedicated full time to the effort, now, some staff must continue to produce work products, process new voter registrations and address changes by Thursday, Oct.6 when the ballot file is due to the printers.
-
General Election ballots cannot be built until winners of the primaries are declared, so King County will be working overtime to ensure deadlines are met. The tight timeline leaves no room for litigation or other delays.
-
Immediately following certification of the Primary, staff has three days to produce 10 editions of the voters' pamphlet ranging from 80 to 176 pages, 10 days to build and mail military ballots, and 19 days to build and mail absentee ballots to more than 600,000 voters.
