I am a Queen Anne High grad, and I just retired from Beacon Hill School, having taught thirty years. I want to help our Board re-focus. My viewpoints:
Children are NOT test scores, and high-stakes testing tells us very little about our students. Let's get off this terrible bandwagon!
The classroom is the essential learning space. We need to show more respect for teachers and children, and there are many ways to do this. Let's talk.
You want Standards? Where are the standards for decent behavior and human interaction? Where are the "bottom lines" for conduct at all grade levels? Students have little respect for weak systems and weak adults.
We seem to have forgotten all those lessons about diversity. Suddenly every child needs to succeed in a certain way. Our building based management is being undermined by directives from above. Does one size fit all?

The incumbent has had four years on the Board, and things haven't gotten better for us. Southeast Seattle schools continue to rank among the worst in the state. We aren't closing any gaps. Our top students leave the neighborhood while the rest of us choose between a bad school and a worse school.
No one in Seattle Public Schools must respond to parents and the public except the School Board Directors. This is your best chance to be heard. Southeast Seattle needs a strong, vocal advocate on the School Board to agitate for change. The incumbent hasn't done it; I will. Vote Charlie Mas for change.
I have coached Little League and tutored high school students. I have been a three-time board member at my daughters' cooperative preschool, and two-time chair of the What's Next After Preschool? school fair. My children are enrolled in Seattle Public Schools.

It has been rewarding to be a member of the Seattle School Board for the past four years. I have worked on policy changes that have put more resources into the classroom to improve the quality of education for all public school students. Major goals have included improved teacher training, elimination of the student achievement gap, and raising the academic achievement levels of all students. Working with parents, neighborhoods, and the business community, we are on the cutting edge of making Seattle Schools truly outstanding. With over 30 years of experience of being involved in Seattle schools and their educational issues-as a parent, volunteer, organizer, and city planner-I have the knowledge and experience to continue to work for those changes.
I thank the voters for allowing me to represent Southeast Seattle and seek their continued support for reelection to this position.
