Jan Kumasaka is
completing her rewarding first term as a member of the Seattle School Board, and
she thanks the voters of Seattle as she seeks their continued support for
reelection to the District #7 Director position.
Kumasaka has over 30
years of experience of supporting Seattle schools and their educational
issues--as a parent, volunteer, tutor, organizer, and city planner. This
background has served her well as she has participated in the process of
establishing the policies to guide the Seattle School District Superintendent
and Administration. She seeks reelection to continue working to improve the
structure for providing a superior public school education for all of Seattle’s
students. Included among her continuing goals are: putting more resources into
the classroom, improving teacher training, eliminating the student achievement
gap, and raising the achievement level of all students.
Kumasaka was Director
of Neighborhood Programs in the City of Seattle’s Department of Neighborhoods;
in this role, she managed such projects as the P-Patch Program and the
Neighborhood Matching Fund. Appointed to successive terms by the state governor,
she served on the Washington State Human Rights Commission for ten years,
including seven as its chairperson.
A graduate of the
University of Washington, Jan Kumasaka is married with four grown children. All
of her children attended and graduated from schools in District #7--Southeast
Seattle--the multi-ethnic and diverse community which she wishes to continue to
represent.

I am a Queen Anne High grad, and I just retired from Beacon Hill School,
having taught thirty years. I want to help our Board re-focus. My viewpoints:
• Children are NOT test scores, and high-stakes testing tells us very little
about our students. Let’s get off this terrible bandwagon!
• The classroom is the essential learning space. We need to show more
respect for teachers and children, and there are many ways to do this. Let’s
talk.
• You want Standards? Where are the standards for decent behavior and human
interaction? Where are the “bottom lines” for conduct at all grade levels?
Students have little respect for weak systems and weak adults.
• We seem to have forgotten all those lessons about diversity. Suddenly
every child needs to succeed in a certain way. Our building based management is
being undermined by directives from above. Does one size fit all?
