E-mail news from Larry Phillips, Metropolitan King County Council Council Puts Parks Maintenance and Expansion Levies on Ballot
In August, voters will get the chance to consider approval of two measures benefiting King County parks users. One measure will maintain operations of King County’s regional parks system, and another will expand and complete the county’s regional trails system as well as support the Woodland Park Zoo. Sound Transit Board Finalizes ST2 After more than two years of planning and gathering input from more than 8000 citizens, the Sound Transit Board passed a motion finalizing a list of transit projects known as ST2. ST2 would expand light rail to Northgate, Lynnwood, Bellevue, Overlake, Federal Way and Tacoma. It also includes studies of light rail to Ballard and high capacity transit on the BNSF Eastside rail corridor. ST2 will go before voters this fall as part of the Roads and Transit package. Teaming Up with J.P. Patches to Protect Puget Sound
I teamed up with Councilmember Jane Hague and local celebrity J.P. Patches to film a public service video educating citizens on environmentally-friendly ways to wash cars. Washing cars on driveways and other impervious surfaces can cause chemicals to run into storm drains which run directly into Puget Sound, damaging its ecosystem. Watch

Puget Sound Town Hall Coming to District 4 In May, the King County Council is coming to District 4 for a Town Hall on cleaning up Puget Sound. I encourage you to join us at the new Olympic Sculpture Park on May 29th at 9:30 a.m. Learn More. Board of Health to Explore Limiting Trans Fat and Improving Menu Labeling The Seattle/King County Board of Health appointed an advisory committee to make recommendations on trans fat and menu labeling. Health officials and consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the health risks associated with trans fat and oversized restaurant portions. My Board of Health colleagues and I want to make it easier for citizens in King County to make healthy choices while dining out. Read more.
Team Phillips Wages Friendly Competition at Food Lifeline My staff and I waged a friendly competition with Seattle City Councilmembers Sally Clark, Jean Godden and their staffs to repackage food at Food Lifeline. The Phillips team prevailed, and the competition resulted in repackaging over 12,000 pounds of food into family-sized portions for hungry families in Western Washington. Learn

Joining with EarthCorps to Celebrate Earth Day I joined
EarthCorps and other volunteers at the Duwamish River to celebrate Earth
Day and tackle important environmental projects. King County Forms Ferry District The King County Council expanded transportation options for county residents by creating a King County Ferry District. The new ferry district will enable operation of passenger-only ferry service on Puget Sound and Lake Washington. Read more.
King County to Study Treating Cruise Ship Wastewater King County will study treating wastewater from cruise ships visiting the Port of Seattle. Currently, cruise ships treat wastewater onboard before dumping it into Puget Sound or the open ocean. Read more.
Improvements Underway for Two-Way Transit on I-90 Sound Transit celebrated the groundbreaking for two-way transit and HOV lane improvements on I-90. The project will improve commutes for transit riders on I-90 Metro and Sound Transit routes. The project also lays the groundwork for future use of light rail in the center roadway. Read more.
Council Forms Countywide Flood Control District In an important step toward addressing the backlog of repairs needed for King County’s aging levees and other flood protection measures, the King County Council formed a countywide flood control zone district. Read more.
