2000
Census results: King
County population
exceeds 1.7 million
On March 23, 2001 the U S Census Bureau
released population counts from the 2000 Census that confirm Washington State
and King County growth in recent years. In
April 2000, the Census counted 1,737,034 persons in King County,
up 15% from 1,507,300 in 1990. Washington
State, with 5,894,000
persons, grew 21% during the 1990s, twice as fast as the nation. Seattle, the State's
largest city, had a population of 563,374 up 9%. The
new numbers, slightly larger than expected, underscored the public's
excellent response to the 2000 Census, which apparently benefited from a
better response rate than the 1990 Census. King County Executive Ron Sims
chaired the local effort to encourage King County
residents to answer the Census, helping to achieve a successful count.

VIEW >> 2000 Population Count for
King County and its Cities
The new population counts will serve a
wide variety of public and private purposes. Total population numbers will
be used for distribution of State and federal funds that will now
accurately reflect the number and location of persons in King County.
Later this year, redistricting of legislative districts and King County
Council districts will ensure that "one person one vote" equity
is maintained.
