How is King County doing?

To promote public trust in King County government, the Auditor's Office, an independent agency within the legislative branch of the county, performs audits and other services that improve performance, accountability and transparency. Outcomes considered in selecting audit projects include the potential for: significant cost impact; improvement in public policies and operational practices; increased efficiency, effectiveness, and performance of public services; and enhanced accountability systems and transparency of county operations.

The King County Auditor's Office has a high rate of acceptance and implementation of its audit recommendations compared to other county audit organizations in the nation. The Auditor's emphasis on conducting follow-up reviews has contributed to the high degree of implementation. In 2008, 73 percent of the office's recommendations were implemented, leading to $175,000 in cost savings to the county.

External peer reviews have cited the King County Auditor's Office with excellence in reporting, effective quality controls, and compliance with applicable government auditing standards. The Auditor's Office has also received national awards and recognition for audit quality, innovation, and impact.
