October 2010

Dear Neighbor,

The Great Recession has had a drastic impact on our regional economy. I have met with families, businesses and social service agencies that have been dealt a devastating blow during these challenging economic times. As we all make difficult decisions to navigate our way through this recession, King County must do the same. This year, King County faces a $60 million shortfall between the revenues we collect and our expenses in the General Fund. This is due to a decline in property and sales tax collection because of the economic downturn.

Seventy-six percent of the General Fund pays for criminal justice and public safety services, with the remainder paying for other programs, such as parks and health and human services. This year, the Council must balance the budget by making painful cuts to services all of us rely on.

As Chair of the Council’s Budget Committee, I am leading the process to balance the 2011 budget. The Council must make difficult decisions and important services will be reduced or eliminated. As the Council continues to examine the budget, I would like to give you an update and encourage you to become involved in the process.

These are challenging times but I am committed to ensuring that we are able to meet the public’s priorities, while maintaining the County’s financial health.

Sincerely,
Signature
Julia Patterson, King County Councilmember - District 5

Understanding the King County Budget

The annual budget is the single most important document through which the Council sets policy for King County and oversees delivery of the services you need and expect. The Council’s budget website has a “big picture” look to help you understand how the King County budget works, and also explains why we are faced with this current shortfall.
