It’s time to Rock ‘n’ Roll!

Julia Running Rock & Roll Half Marathon

On June 26, I participated in the 2nd Annual Rock n' Roll half marathon - a 13.1 mile trek from Tukwila to Seattle! I was joined by my colleague Councilmember Jan Drago, Seattle City Councilmembers Sally Bagshaw and Richard Conlin and King County Board of Health member Dr. Bud Nicola. A number of King County employees, including my entire staff, also participated.

As Chair of the King County Board of Health, I’m proud of everyone for their effort to make a positive impact on their health, their friends and family, and raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for a good cause.

In this e-news, I’m sharing helpful information that you can use to eat healthy, be active and stay safe this summer.

Have a happy and safe 4th of July!

June E-News Survey

Summer is the perfect time to exercise outside and I want to hear how you like to stay fit.

What’s your favorite way to exercise?

TAKE THE SURVEY

May survey results: Last month, I asked you to tell me your primary mode from traveling around town. I learned almost 75% of you travel primarily by car. While the weather is nice consider biking to work, which combines your commute and exercise into one! View the full May survey results.

Protect your health and your heart

Did you know that more than half of King County residents (54%) are overweight or obese? The nation’s new health care reform laws include not only new rules around health care, but also the expansion of menu labeling throughout the nation to help Americans make healthier choices away from home and combat obesity.

However, while menu and package labeling provides valuable information, also knowing how much one should eat is critical. After all, what good is calorie information if you don't know how many calories you should consume? Find out in my recent op-ed.

Tips to keep summer safe

Summer is here! The kids are out of school, adults are on vacation and it’s time for outdoor activities like riding bikes and swimming at the lake. However, summer is also the time when our safety is most at risk.

Each June, the National Safety Council (NSC) recognizes National Safety Month, an initiative that heightens public awareness of important safety issues. This year’s theme is “Celebrating Safe Communities,” which prioritizes summer safety, safe driving behaviors, and injury prevention in the home and workplace. You can read more about these issues, as well as tips on how you and your family can stay safe and healthy this summer and throughout the year.
