  • King County Budget adopted

November 2009

Dear Friend,

This afternoon the King County Council adopted the 2010 budget, which guides the county's role in providing services over the next year. I was honored to be selected to serve on this year’s Budget Leadership Team, the budget decision-making body, and I want to share critical information about the budget with you.

Because revenues from sales and property taxes (which fund critical public safety, human services, and public health services) are down, we could not fund many valuable programs previously provided.  However, the Council did everything possible to retain services that King County residents value and rely upon.

The Council heard from thousands of residents who shared the importance of funding parks, domestic violence and sexual assault programs, and the Sheriff’s office.  I want to thank everyone who wrote in, called me, or attended a public hearing.  The Council took your comments into serious consideration as we developed the budget.

While this budget deliberation was difficult, there are several bright spots I’d like to share:

  • Through efficiencies found in an audit of Metro Transit, the Council was able to prevent cuts in bus service for the next two years.

  • While there were many cuts to human services, the Council restored $1.4 million in funding for countywide domestic violence and sexual assault counseling, shelter, and legal aid.

  • The Council balanced the budget without using our Rainy Day Reserve.

  • The Council was able to keep the 39 local unincorporated parks open.

  • Despite the $56 million budget hole for 2010, no criminal justice agencies will receive cuts of more than 1% – this includes the Sheriff, District Court, Prosecutor and Superior Court.

  • Even in tough economic times, through prudent spending and maintaining reserves, King County is able to retain its stellar AAA credit rating.

More information about the budget is available here. As always, it is an honor and privilege to serve you.

Sincerely,

Julia Patterson
King County Councilmember - District 5
